W. VA Police to crack down on oversized trucks on Turnpike at night

West Virginia state police announced an initiative to crack down on oversized trucks illegally using roadways between sunset and sunrise, according to the Times West Virginian. Truck drivers had been taking advantage of lax enforcement during the nighttime hours according to the Parkway Authority’s director of operations, Tyrone Gore. Nearly every state prohibits movement of overdimension loads at night.

The Baltimore Sun reported that a backhoe loaded on a flatbed trailer, in tow behind a dump truck, struck the ceiling of the southbound tunnel. The collision caused ceiling tiles and parts of their support structures to fall according to Cpl. Jonathan Green, a spokesman for the Maryland Transportation Authority Police. Luckily there were no other vehicles involved and no one was hurt. Remember to always check the height of your load!

Niagara highways littered with accidents; permit vehicle fined

Ontario Provincial Police officers were investigating a weather-related crash Sunday, when they spotted another transport carrying a wide load while being led by an escort vehicle – an infraction during poor driving conditions. OPP charged the driver and his employer with permit violations.

Not long afterward, another transport drew the attention of OPP. The truck slid off the Third Street exit ramp from the Toronto-bound QEW and rolled over onto its side and into a ditch. A 62-year-old man from Woodstock was charged with careless driving.

“We experience this pretty much every storm that we get,” Idzenga said. “We get tractor-trailers that think that because of their size and their weight they can travel at or above the speed limit and not be affected by the weather.”

Wide loads, clear rules

Five trucking companies from outside North Carolina have filed suit against the state of North Carolina, alleging that members of the State Highway Patrol acted illegally when they hit drivers with big fines for violating oversized- or wide-load permits.

The companies take issue with troopers citing them for not having two escort vehicles with the oversized loads — modular homes, for instance, or bulldozers — but also writing the violation as though a permit never was obtained to use the roadway. Lacking an escort vehicle or using an unapproved route carries a smaller fine. Still, state law gives authorities the right to nullify a permit if the lesser rules are violated. If the permit is violated, the lack of a second escort vehicle, normally a $500 fine, can escalate to a penalty as high as $25,000.
